notes
Autistic singer songwriter, Donna Williams, is a lyrically powerful and vocally moving artist with an idiosyncratic style and a voice of striking honesty and warmth. Five years on from her first album, Nobody Nowhere, Mutation is her amazing second album and individual tracks are also available on iTunes.
Donna Williams' voice, whilst a style and sound all its own has been compared with artists like Missy Higgins, Jewel, Corinne Bailey Rae, Nathalie Maines (of the Dixie Chicks), Tori Amos, Nanci Griffith, Juliana Hatfield, Helen Reddy and Karen Carpenter. Her phrasing and lyrics, whilst in English, have been described as in the unique tradition of "French Chanson".
The Mutation CD has a classy, contemporary surrealism that combines great, incredibly catchy music with soaring atmospheric spoken word pieces and songs , awe inspiring musicianship and scintillating effects yet maintains a surprisingly 'natural' feel to it.
Mutation is as moving as it is socially challenging, like in the contemporary dance track, 'Subtlety'. Then in other tracks like 'Mirror', she hauntingly combines poetry and spoken word with a moving song and beautiful, pure vocals, in a way that almost creates almost the essence of ghosts within one's own world. She confronts discrimination in tracks like 'All Be Happy'and addresses the essential soul survival inherent in defending the right to be oneself in 'Simply Be'.
The Mutation CD is also filled with humour and quirky surrealism like in poetic, atmospheric spoken-word tracks like 'When Mitzy Flew' and the haunting poem of 'Before Mind'is intricately woven into a musical backdrop and leads seemlessly, like the other spoken word tracks into the abundance of song tracks in between.
Mutation is a revolutionary album, challenging the right of society to segregate and subjugate its citizens like in her title track 'Mutation'.
Mutation is powerful musical therapy that covers the whole spectrum of emotions and delivers you gently back to shore after the adventure.
You'll find belonging and understanding in 'Mutation' and the album includes a lyrics booklet with lyrics to all songs on the album.
Don't forget to also check out Donna's first CD,
'Nobody Nowhere'.

BEAUTIFUL Mutation
author: n.Some writers and some singers give words for things many of us felt but didn't know how to say. This is one of them. I plan to show some of these songs to NTs I work with, for Autism Awareness... the good kind!

Donna gifts the listener. Her beautiful voice is a true gift to the ears. Donna's lyrics are the gift I give to my heart. Thank you Donna for making both possible

A Beautiful Musical Mutation
author: StuartThanks to Donna's writing abilities and Akash's studio mastery, 'Mutation' improves on 'Nobody Nowhere' in terms of improved production values and techniques, with full length songs and shorter poems blending seamlessly. I have listened to this album in full five times in the last two days. In my opinion, 'All Be Happy', 'Beautiful Behavioural Mutations' and 'Subtlety' are the stand out tracks. Without a doubt my album for the year of 2005.

"Mutations" is just as good as "Nobody Nowhere". I thorougly enjoyed it. Donna Williams is very talented. Like Donna, I am also autistic. I appreciate her work greatly.
Beautiful!
author: MarcieDonna Williams has put to poetry and music what I and so many others on the autism spectrum have expressed - and done so more beautifully than can be expressed!
Magic
author: AnaThe reality, the humaness of all the songs can only be described as sacred. Each word, each note, and the dance of the two, give glimpses into the soul of the artist and the soul of the universe that most people don't dare to express. Travelling the crowded streets of the city with Mutation playing wrapped me into a world of magic. I shivered despite the hot sun. My soul vibrated to the realness I was hearing and my own realness poked its head out long enough for me to weave it into my own pieces of song. That is the magic of this CD - thank you for sharing it.
Humanity in all its wild glory
author: JoannaI'm no audiophile, but I know sincerity when I hear it and this CD is a triumph of the spirit. Just drove home with the windows down and Simply Be playing loud and clear ... If you're on the autistic spectrum, or just a human being in love with existence, Donna and Akash's work will echo that fire. The music spans genres and moods, but taken as a whole, it's a story about a journey from darkness into the light.
